Die Arbeit und die Persönlichkeit Lucy Lippards gehören unzweifelhaft zu den unverzichtbaren Referenzen der
zeitgenössischen Kunst seit den 60er Jahren. Sie ist Autorin von 20 Büchern
über Kunst, Feminismus, Politik und publizierte u.a. für Art in America, The Village Voice, In These
Times und Z Magazine. Als Autorin und Austellungsmacherin gehörte sie zu den zentralen Figuren in der
Entwicklung der historischen conceptual art. Ihr mittlerweile klassischer
Kommentar „The Dematerialisation of Art“ lieferte entscheidende Impulse für die
an die conceptual-art anschließenden Debatten und ihr Buch „Six Years....“ ist
eine der wichtigsten Quellen dieser Zeit.
In ihrer Rolle als Kulturkritikerin, Kuratorin und Kommentatorin gab sie bereits
in dieser frühen Zeit sehr nachdrücklich die traditionell distanzierte Position
dieser Betätigungsfelder auf und schuf durch ihre experimentellen Methoden neue
Herangehensweisen. Sie ist eine Pionierin und nach wie vor eine der wichtigsten
Vertreterinnen feministischer Kunstkritik; auch im Bereich des Kunst-Aktivismus
kommt ihr eine Vorreiterrolle zu. Sie war an mehreren kunst-aktivistischen
Gruppen beteiligt, darunter der legendären Art Workers’ Coalitionund in den 80erjahren PAD/D.
Als Kritikerin gehört Lippard zu denjenigen, die mit dem elitären Selbstverständnis
professioneller Kunstbetrachtung am nachhaltigsten gebrochen haben. Die Lektüre
ihrer Texte macht es deutlich: Sie hat eine Form der Sprache im Bereich der
Kunst etabliert, die das Feld in schier unabsehbarer Weise völlig neuen und
wichtigen Möglichkeiten der Reflexion, Kritik und Partizipation geöffnet hat –
fernab von den Floskeln gängiger Kunstbetrachtung und den Ritualen vornehmlich
männlichen Kompetenzgebarens.
Im Anschluss an den Vortrag von Lucy Lippard werden
Michel Chevalier und Rahel Puffert von »target: autonopop« präsentieren, was Lippards
Arbeit im gegenwärtigen Kunstkontext für ihre eigene Praxis bedeutet. Direktor
der Biennale de Paris Alexandre Gurita sowie Yann Toma und Rose Marie Barrientos
werden ebenso ihre Perspektiven erläutern. Das Publikum ist sehr willkommen,
sich in die Diskussion einzumischen.

Lucy Lippard, her work and person, is unquestionably one of the essential
reference-points of contemporary art since the 1960s. She has published 20
books on feminism, art, politics and written for Art in America, TheVillage Voice, In TheseTimes, and Z Magazine, among others. As author and
exhibition organizer, she was one of the central figures of the development of
historic conceptual art. Her now-classic commentary The Dematerialization of
Artspurred debate during and following conceptual art, and her famous book Six Yearsis one of the most important
sources of that time.
In her role as a cultural critic, curator, and commentator she dismissed very
insistently – and from the very beginning – the detachment traditionally
connected with these activities, while her experimental methods yielded new
approaches. She is a pioneer of feminist art critique and still one of its most
important exponents, as well a role-model for art activists. She participated
in several activist groups, including the legendary Art Workers’ Coalitionand the PAD/Din the 1980s.
As a critic, Lippard, like some of her colleagues
effectively broke with the elitist self-image of professional art appreciation.
Reading her texts today makes the following clear: she established a kind of
language in the world of art that opened the field in a sheerly incalculable
way for completely new and important possibilities of reflection, critique and
participation – far beyond the flowery phrases of well-established art
appreciation, or the rituals of that predominately male demeanor of expertise.
Lippard’s talk will be followed by a presentation of
what the »target: autonopop« reading of her work has meant to it, practically,
in the present day art context. Biennale de Paris director Alexandre Gurita and
Sorbonne reseachers Yann Toma and Rose Marie Barrientos will also present their
perspectives. The audience will also be very welcome
to join the discussion.
Today's talks and discussion are in conjunction with the Art&Flux research project- Paris
1 Panthéon, and are the first installment of the upcoming Biennale de Paris/»target: autonopop« congress "The
contemporary art market: a hegemony laboratory under capitalism"
